Reaching a Milestone

At 8am on January 10th 2008, history was made when the final rock was placed on the breakwater of The World by the Director of Nakheel, Hamza Mustafa. This significant milestone marked an end to the reclamation of the phenomenal project which used a staggering 30 million tonnes of rock.

Encircling the group of islands is a 27 kilometre breakwater, specially designed to disperse wave energy and control the current of water flow within The World. Its completion has also led to the creation of 350 hectares of artificial reef, which according to marine biologist Professor Joseph Valencic is a condo for flourishing marine life.
